Minnehaha Academy, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A by Minnesota Basketball News, has a limited bench, but it still finds ways to dominate.

Hosting Caledonia (19-6, 10-0) Saturday night at St. Thomas Academy, the Redhawks dominated in the second half, winning 68-46 against a Warriors team that beat them last year.

Mia Curtis, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard who’s averaging more than 19 points per game, and senior guard Terra Rhoades led the way for the Redhawks. Curtis finished with a game-high 27 points, while Rhoades contributed 17, including a perfect two-for-two night from behind the arc and 9 for 11 from the free-throw line.

After opening the night with poor three-point shooting, Curtis and the Redhawks found their groove. Curtis drained 50 percent from three-point-land, and helped Minnehaha Academy (16-6, 7-0) pull away from the Warriors when it mattered.

“She’s turning into an elite scorer,” coach Josh Thurow said. “She’s going to score every night, and for a coach, that’s reassuring.”

Rhoades, one of two seniors hoping the Redhawks can return to the state tournament, has a way of making plays happen, Thurow said. Her cross-court vision and ability to spread the floor, including finding ways to get the ball to post players, makes her an unmatchable asset.

“She’s the most competitive kid in our program,” Thurow said.

The game wasn’t a cakewalk for Minnehaha Academy, however. Caledonia went into the break down four, with Katie Tornstrom leading Warriors scorers with 11 points.

Then the Redhawks’ second-half defense intervened, holding Tornstrom, a junior guard averaging a Warriors-leading 15 points per game, to 2 second-half points.

“Our defense in the second half changed,” Thurow said. “It improved.”

Ashley Schroeder, a junior guard, finished with 10 points in the Warriors’ regular season finale.
