Coming off a rare loss, Cretin-Derham Hall got the chance to turn back around in a rowdy environment and get a big win.

The Raiders didn’t waste it.

Cretin-Derham Hall, the seventh-ranked team in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, hosted No. 3-3A DeLaSalle in the opener of a girls-boys doubleheader Saturday at home, winning 60-52.

Frannie Hottinger had 20 points to lead all scorers as the Raiders bounced back from a 73-67 loss to Mounds View the night before.

DeLaSalle was without its leading scorer, Nora Francois, but after facing double-digit deficits much of the game, the Islanders got within four points late in the second half at 48-44. Cretin-Derham Hall bounced back with a Lizzie Edinger three-pointer and a Hottinger fastbreak layup to push the lead back and essentially seal the game.

“They went on a run and sometimes we’ve had a little challenge meeting that,” Raiders coach Joe Lynch said.

Edinger had 15 points and Autam Mendez added 10 points for the Raiders (16-4, 11-2).

Elaina Jones led DeLaSalle (13-6, 3-1) with 16 points, while Dacoda Speidel had 12.

Defense was big for the Raiders, who made it difficult for the Islanders to get the ball inside.

“Phenomenal effort on defense,” Lynch said. “They’re a really good team, they’ve got a lot of talent. We came out and we decided to play.”

Lynch said the big crowd, featuring plenty of early entries for the boys’ game that followed, helped energize the team.

The atmosphere also perhaps helped prepare the Raiders for something further down the road. If they have aspirations of playing at state, they’ll need to play well on back-to-back days. Following Friday's loss, they bounced back against a tough Islanders team.

“If we want to get to state, we’re gonna play Wednesday-Thursday,” Lynch said. “So this is kind of in preparation for that. We’ve gotta prepare mentally; we’ve gotta deal with physical tiredness and we’ve gotta be able to push through it. I thought we did a great job.”
