Fans' choice for Top Performer

Carmen Backes, Chisago Lakes: Backes outdueled Grand Rapids’ Heaven Hamling to lead the Wildcats to the win. Backes finished with 37 points, capping a solid week that included a 32-point outing in a 70-54 victory over North Branch and a 23-point night in a 71-70 loss to St. Francis.


Top Performer candidates

Kallie Theisen, Wayzata: Theisen scored a season-high 30 points in a 79-70 victory over Maranatha Christian Academy on Jan. 3 to keep the Trojans (14-0, 2-0) undefeated. It was nearly double her season average of 15.1 points per game. Wayzata moved up to the No. 2 ranking in the latest Minnesota Basketball News rankings after also beating Chanhassen 42-38 on Jan. 5.

Joey Batt, New Ulm: Batt posted back-to-back 27-point performances in victories over Fairmont (67-48) and Faribault (59-54). Batt knocked down five three-pointers and finished 10-for-16 from the field against Fairmont on Jan. 4. Two days later, she followed posted a 9-for-15 shooting performance versus Faribault.

Lariah Washington, St. Cloud Apollo: Washington had two games with at least 30 points. She scored 35 in a 70-65 victory over Becker on Jan. 2 and finished with 33 to help the Eagles (8-5, 1-4) knock off Minneapolis North 80-67 two days later. Washington closed the week with 27 points in a 69-63 loss to Sauk Rapids-Rice on Jan. 5.

Sara Scalia, Stillwater: Scalia led the Ponies (6-7, 2-3) past rival East Ridge 78-65 on Jan. 5 behind a game-high 34 points. She also scored 23 points in a 73-67 loss to Minneapolis South on Jan. 2.

Madeline Loder, Orono: Loder shouldered the scoring load for the Spartans in a matchup with Class 3A power and No. 2-ranked Holy Angels on Jan. 3. She went 15 of 26 from the field and hit five three-pointers to finish with 40 points, but it wasn’t enough as Orono fell 77-70.

Heaven Hamling, Grand Rapids: Hamling scored above her season average of 20.6 points per game in three games for the No. 5-3A Thunderhawks (10-4). She posted 21 in a 62-60 win over Brainerd on Jan. 2 and had 22 in an 81-47 win over North Branch three days later. Hamling capped the week with 28 points in a 68-60 loss to No. 16-3A Chisago Lakes on Jan. 6.

McKenna Hofschild, Prior Lake: Hofschild came up big against two Class 4A top-10 ranked teams last week. She scored 25 -- nearly half of Prior Lake’s total -- in a 72-49 loss to No. 1-4A Eastview on Jan. 5 and had 23 as the Lakers were edged by No. 10-4A Moorhead 87-86.

Abbey McDonald, Hibbing: The Bluejackets defeated International Falls 80-61 -- their second consecutive victory -- thanks to 31 points from McDonald, who went 11-for-25 from the field and knocked down seven free throws.

Monika Czinano, Watertown-Mayer: Czinano led the No. 7-2A Royals (9-3, 2-0) to a 68-60 victory over Rockford with 35 points. It was the fourth game this season Czinano has scored 30 or more points.
