Nuggets improve to 7-4 after taking down No. 9-3A Otters.

First Report

While Hawley's girls' basketball program might seem to have a roster full of players that struggles to drive, they looked like a team on the verge of growing up quickly Thursday night.

The Nuggets edged Fergus Falls, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A by Minnesota Basketball News, 55-49, thanks to a combination of stout defense, timely shot-making and poise.

Sophomore guard Paige Thompson led the Nuggets with 15 points.

Rianna Lilleby hit a three-pointer with just over two minutes to play, putting the Nuggets (7-4) up 48-45. Lilleby, who finished the night with 11 points, added a breakaway layup and a free throw in the final minute, while the Otters (8-3) missed six free throws in the final five minutes of the game, never able to get over the hump.

Fergus Falls was led by Katelyn Strand, who finished with 15 points, and Lily Pearson, who contributed 10.
