Twelve Minnesota seniors earn McDonald's All American nominations

Park Center's Mikayla Hayes and Maple Grove's Brad Davison headline the list.

Twelve of Minnesota's top high school basketball seniors recently earned a nomination for the 2017 McDonald's All American Games.

While none made the final rosters for the annual games -- the 40th for the boys and the 16th for the girls -- held at the United Center in Chicago on March 29, the list shows the state's basketball talent continues to be recognized nationally. 

Boys Nominees: 

  1. Brad Davison: The Maple Grove guard is averaging 25.8 points per game this season. The Wisconsin commit has helped the Crimson (12-1) earn the No. 2 spot in Class 4A rankings by Minnesota Basketball News. 
  2. Nathan Reuvers: Another Wisconsin commit, Reuvers leads No. 3-4A Lakeville North (12-1) at 27.5 ppg and is seventh in the state in scoring this season.
  3. Goanar Mar: The 6-foot-7 power forward from DeLaSalle is averaging 23.8 ppg and looking to lead the No. 1-ranked Islanders (12-2) to their sixth straight Class 3A state title. Mar has committed to play at George Mason. 
  4. Jericho Sims: A four-star recruit according to ESPN, Sims has committed to play for coach Shaka Smart at Texas. Sims is averaging 25.7 ppg for Cristo Ray Jesuit (10-5). 
  5. Theo John: A Marquette commit, John is averaging 13.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for No. 1-4A Champlin Park (14-0). The power forward is a three-star recruit in ESPN's rankings. 
  6. McKinley Wright: Wright is leading the way for undefeated Champlin Park, averaging 23.5 points per game. The Dayton commit scored a season-high 34 in a 101-70 win over Woodbury on Dec 29. 

Note: Gary Trent Jr., the former Apple Valley player is now at Prolific Prep in California, made the final roster for the game. Trent Jr. has committed to play for Duke. 

Girls Nominees: 

  1. Mikayla Hayes: A Florida commit, Hayes is averaging 10.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for Park Center (13-5).
  2. Bailey Helgren: One of two nominees from Edina (13-5), Helgren is an imposing force on the floor. The Kansas commit has received a three-star grade from ESPN.
  3. Annika Jank: The Colorado commit leads the Hornets at 18.9 ppg. Her season-high of 29 points came in a 57-42 win against Chaska on Dec. 6. 
  4. Rae Johnson: Signed to play at Iowa State, Johnson is averaging 18.9 ppg for No. 9-4A St. Michael-Albertville (11-4). Johnson scored a season-high of 30 in a win over Eastveiw. 
  5. Rachel Ranke: Ranke is ranked as the country's 58th-best senior by ESPN. The four-star recruit is committed to Kansas State and is averaging 15.2 ppg for No. 5-4A Eastview (14-3). 
  6. Kristin Scott: Another Iowa State commit, Scott is having a great season, averaging 19.5 ppg for No. 4-3A Kasson-Mantorville (12-4). Scott is a three-star prospect according to ESPN.  

To be considered for the McDonald's All American Games, players must be nominated by an official from their high schools or by a representative of the games' selection committee, which includes some of the nation’s top high school basketball coaches and media members.

This year, more than 750 players received a nomination by the committee, which used a series of balloting system votes to finalize the list of 24 boys and 24 girls who made the rosters for the games.

Past Minnesotans to make the final rosters include Tyus Jones (Apple Valley, 2014), Reid Travis (DeLaSalle, 2014), Rashad Vaughn (Findlay College Prep, NV, 2014), Cole Aldrich (Bloomington Jefferson, 2007), Nia Coffey (Hopkins, 2013), Rebekah Dahlman (Braham, 2013) and Tayler Hill (Minneapolis South, 2009).

The games alumni are a who's who of NBA and WNBA stars, including LeBron James, Candace Parker and Kevin Durant.
