Hayfield hosting girls' basketball showcase on Jan. 14

The second annual event features 14 high school teams, including several ranked in Class 3A and Class 2A.

Hayfield is hosting its second annual girls' basketball showcase on Saturday, Jan. 14.

The event features 14 high school teams, including several ranked in Minnesota Basketball News' Class 3A and Class 2A polls. The seven-game slate is highlighted by showdowns between No. 3-2A Plainview-Elgin-Millville and No. 4-2A Norwood Young America at 1 p.m. and No. 3-3A Kasson-Mantorville and No. 5-3A Orono at 5 p.m. 

Tickets for the day are $8 for adults and $5 for students, and games are held in two gyms at Hayfield High School.


Tournament preview

Plainview-Elgin-Millville vs. Norwood Young America, 1 p.m.

The defending Class 2A state champion Plainview-Elgin-Millville continues its great play with a 10-1 record this year and a No. 3 ranking in Class 2A from Minnesota Basketball News. Norwood Young America is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A and is 11-0 behind the strong play of juniors Bren Fox and Kali Grimm

Sleepy Eye vs. Lyle/Austin Pacelli, 2 p.m. 

Lyle/Austin Pacelli lost to eventual Class 1A state champion Goodhue by a single point in the subsection final a year ago. The No. 10-1A Athletics (8-2) are led this season by juniors Brooke Walter and Kristi Fett. Sleepy Eye is coming off a state tournament appearance and has a 7-4 record.

St. Croix Lutheran vs. Tracy-Milroy-Belaton, 3 p.m.

Tracy-Milroy-Belaton has not lost since Dec. 13 and boasts a 10-1 record. St. Croix Lutheran is 8-3, led by the scoring of junior Audrey Gadison (15.4 points per game).

Kenyon-Wanamingo vs. Mountain Iron-Buhl, 4 p.m.

Mara Quam leads Kenyon-Wanamingo, which has a record of 6-4. Mountain Iron-Buhl is 10-0 and holds the No. 1 ranking in Class 1A. The Rangers are led by senior Chelsea Mason, who has more than 2,000 career points.

Kasson-Mantorville vs. Orono, 5 p.m.

In this Class 3A showdown, No. 3-ranked Kasson-Mantorville (8-3) features Iowa St. commit Kristin Scott while No. 5 Orono (9-3) are led by Tori Andrew, a Yale commit who averages 20.4 points per game. Andrew is a skilled marksmen who has hit eight three-pointers in a game this year.

Bryon vs. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, 6 p.m.

Byron (6-5) is led by Kansas State commit Ayoka Lee. The 6-foot-5 junior is averaging 23 points and 15 rebounds a game. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (7-5) is led by Maddie and Marnie Wagner, who both average double figures in scoring on the year. 

Hayfield vs. Waseca, 7 p.m. 

Hayfield (11-1) is ranked No. 8 in Class 2A. Juniors Maggie Streightiff and Carrie Rutledge lead the way for the Vikings. Senior guard Emily Karsten and sophomore forward Madison Gehloff have helped No. 12-3A Waseca to a 9-3 record.
