Northfield’s Kaylyn Kidd isn’t always full of grace driving to the hoop but she’s got a knack for nailing unusual finishes.

Kidd forced in a difficult layup that sparked a late run for the Raiders, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A by the Minnesota Basketball News, to a 58-51 victory over Farmington at the St. Olaf Holiday Classic.

Kidd finished with 12 points, nine of which came in the second half. Her contested layup with 2:50 left served as the start to a 8-3 closing run for Northfield.

“Kaylyn is strong. It doesn’t always look pretty but she’s got pretty good body control,” Raiders head coach Tony Mathison said. “Very rarely does she get a ball blocked.”

Northfield (7-1, 5-0) bounced back from their first loss of the season but Farmington (4-3, 0-2) had the Raiders on the ropes early in the second half.

Northfield led 32-19 at the break but the Tigers opened the second half with a 14-2 run and kept it close the rest of the way.

Sydney Blandin finished with 25 points for Farmington, who frustrated the Raiders with their trapping defense.

Northfield shot 52 percent from the field in the first half, but only 30 percent in the second half.

“We knew their pressure was coming,” Mathison said. “There were times where we dribbled too much and that’s when we turned it over.”

Grace Touchette also finished with 12 points for Northfield while Annika Hoff turned in a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Farmington closes out the tournament Friday against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva while the Raiders will face Eagan.
