A busy week of big matchups concluded Saturday with some ranked teams falling in blowout fashion at the Breakdown Sports Girls' Tip Off Classic. (Centennial, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A by Minnesota Basketball News, rolled No. 2-3A Alexandria 64-44; No. 3-1A Mountain Iron-Buhl routed No. 1-1A Goodhue 78-34; No. 4-4A St. Michael-Albertville fell to Apple Valley 68-47; and No. 2-4A Eastview topped Minnetonka 74-48.)
This week, we turn our attention to matchups featuring several longtime state tournament participants, including No. 3-3A Holy Angels' showdown with No. 2-1A Maranatha Christian Academy on Tuesday.
Last season, the Stars made their first trip to state in more than a decade. They came home with the Class 3A title following a victory over Winona.
The Mustangs have been regulars at the Class 1A state tournament since 2010, with six straight tournament trips. They were runners-up a year ago, marking their second consecutive second-place finish after winning titles in 2011 and 2012.
While their histories fall on different ends of the spectrum, the recent rise of Holy Angels and Maranatha Christian have coincided, making their contest our pick for the Top Game of the Week.
