Anoka’s 36-27 halftime lead appeared safe, but the Tornadoes needed game-sealing free throws near the end of regulation to edge Sauk Centre 68-64 after the Mainstreeters poured in 37 points during the second half.
Senior center Brittany Bongartz paced the Tornadoes (1-1) with 20 points, with the only other player in double-figures being junior guard Emily Smith with 10 points.
Sauk Centre’s surge in the second frame can largely be attributed to the hot shooting of junior guard Maesyn Theisen, who scored 18 points in the second half behind an impressive five three-pointers for the Mainstreeters (1-1).
