Academy of Holy Angels senior Megan Thompson and her 11 second-half points were just enough to secure a gritty win over Minnehaha Academy 75-73 Thursday night.

Both teams ran into foul trouble throughout the game, combining for 59 total fouls and 79 free throws. The Stars converted 24-32, while the Redhawks only converted 26-47 (55 percent) of their free throws.

Junior Terra Rhoades led Minnehaha Academy, ranked No. 5 in Class 2A by Minnesota Basketball News, with 20 points. She scored 14 of those in the first half, resulting in a four-point Redhawks lead at halftime.

Academy of Holy Angels coach Dan Woods knew changes had to be made in the second half, especially from the leaders. Woods noted that getting back to the basics, both offensively and defensively, was the only way for the Stars (No. 3-3A) to pull out a victory.

Holy Angels responded to Woods’ exhortations, especially Megan Thompson, who provided the second half offensive spark.

“I tried to stay calm and collected because I knew the team needed me to do my job,” said Thompson. “I also knew the bench would really step up for us.”

The other Stars players did, in fact, step up. Junior Riley Thalhuber contributed with eight second half points to help rally her team, and sophomore Destinee Oberg excelled in the paint, scoring 16 total points.

Minnehaha Academy’s leading scorer Mia Curtis tallied 18 points, and the tandem of Terra Rhoades and Curtis kept the Redhawks in the game. However, once Nevaeh Galloway and Avery New both fouled out, gaps appeared in Minnehaha Academy’s paint presence.

Holy Angels (3-0) will face Maranatha December 6. Minnehaha falls to 2-1 and will face Concordia Academy December 9.
