Park Center guard Hannah Schaub felt mixed emotions when the Pirates won the 2014 Class 3A championship.

Park Center guard Hannah Schaub felt mixed emotions when the Pirates won the 2014 Class 3A championship.

Schaub missed the tournament after suffering a knee injury in the section tournament. After Park Center won, she said she avoided the postgame celebration.

“It was bittersweet,” she said. “I was so happy that they won, so I went home right after the game to work on my knee.”

Schaub, now a senior, was on the floor for all but one minute of Saturday’s championship game, scoring 11 points and handing out a team-leading six assists.

“I feel so good now,” Schaub said. “After the knee injury last year, I was so focused on coming back. Words can’t describe this.”

Coach gains a fan

Ara-Borup coach David Smart wrapped up a perfect season with a victory in the Class 1A championship Saturday, but that wasn’t the best part of his weekend. On Friday he became a grandfather for the first time. His daughter, Kelli, a member of the Cougars’ 2009 championship team, gave birth to girl, Alexis.

“[Kelli] sent me a text this morning saying ‘the latest fan of the Ada-Borup Cougar fan club is all ready for the game,’  ” Smart said.

Staking claims

The smaller the class of teams in Minnesota sports, the greater the miles separating schools. Regular-season meetings are unlikely, meaning rankings are based on projections rather than proof.

Saturday offered the latter as Sauk Centre, ranked No. 1 by the Minnesota Basketball News, met No. 2 Dover-Eyota.

“I was talking to [Eagles’ coach] Brian [Harris] before the game and we both agreed that oftentimes the top two teams in a class don’t meet in the state championship,” Sauk Centre coach Scott Bergman said. “But we both felt that we were the top two teams, and they won it on the court.”
