• SECTION 6: All good thing must come to an end, even for Hopkins.

The three-time defending state champions were upset by Eden Prairie 51-46 on Saturday in the Section 6 semifinals at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School. Hopkins (24-4) beat Eden Prairie 63-59 and 73-38 during their two regular-season matchups in the Lake Conference.

“It’s amazing to win three in a row,” Hopkins coach Brian Cosgriff said. “In order to win four in a row would have to be a historical event.”

Eden Prairie (17-9) raced to a 19-point halftime lead, 34-15, and then held on. The Eagles were outscored 31-17 following the intermission.

“They really shot the ball well in the first half,” Cosgriff said. “We fought back in the second half. I’m really proud of my team.”

Junior guard Andrea Jirele paced Eden Prairie with 14 points, including going 4-for-4 from three-point range in the opening half. Nobody for Hopkins scored in double figures.

“It’s a weird game,” Cosgriff said. “How can we just beat them by 35 [on Feb. 25] and lose today.”

In the other semifinal game, Minnetonka jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead en route to a 63-37 win over Edina. Courtney Fredrickson led the Skippers with 20 points.
