How important is Chase Coley to the Minneapolis Washburn girls’ basketball team? The 6-2 senior forward averaged 25.6 points, 17 rebounds and nearly seven blocks per game in the Millers’ first three games. But they lost two of them, so last week Coley ratcheted her game up a notch. She averaged 32.6 points, 20.3 rebounds and nine blocks as Washburn beat Tartan 79-71, Duluth East 79-46 and Rochester Century 75-39 to improve to 4-2.

1,000 for coach Davis

Friday the 13th proved to be fortunate for first-year Eden Prairie wrestling coach Scot Davis. The former longtime coach at Owatonna picked up his 1,000th career dual-meet victory with the Eagles’ 58-17 victory over Columbia Heights. No high school wrestling coach in the United States has more career victories.

Davis is in his 39th year as a head coach. His teams garnered 886 victories in his 25 seasons at Owatonna.

From preps to the Olympics?

Jakob Ellingson, who won the boys’ pursuit championship at the state Nordic ski meet last February as a senior at Hopkins, has been named one of seven Team USA “next generation” future Winter Olympic hopefuls by the U.S. Olympic Committee and TD Ameritrade. Ellingson, 19, competed for Team USA in the World Junior Biathlon Championships in Austria last winter, finishing 20th in the 12.5K individual event.

• Liz Schepers, a freshman forward, paced the Mound Westonka girls’ hockey team to back-to-back shutout victories over Mankato East (5-0) and Minnehaha Academy (2-0) with a combined five goals and one assist. She leads the White Hawks with 15 goals and nine assists.

• Senior point guard Makena Panning had 46 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and six steals as Chaska routed St. Louis Park 85-25 and Waconia 108-65 last week.
