Quick Q&A

Matty Steele New Life Academy, Sr., Basketball, volleyball

Matty Steele is a basketball and volleyball player, Athena Award winner, successful non-profit charity owner and future dentist.

On winning the Athena Award: I am so honored that they chose me.

Talk about your non-profit, “Buy a Coffee, Buy a Well”: For the last two years, I get up every Wednesday morning at 5:30 a.m. and go to school, where a friend and I sell coffee and hot chocolate to faculty and students. All the proceeds go to an organization, Living Water International, that builds wells around the world.

Have you built any wells? We’ve raised enough to build a well in our name in Uganda and repair six wells in Haiti.

After graduation, are you done with organized sports? One word: Intramurals!

Where will you attend college? I’m going to Baylor. I never really thought about going to school in Texas before, but it has so many great things. It’s kind of a God thing. I applied to other schools, but He closed all of the other doors.

Are you ready for Texas? I’m originally from the South, so I love the warm accents. And the warm weather.
