MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN millers 69, MINNEAPOLIS ROOSEVELT teddies 51

Washburn took a big step to the Minneapolis city title with a 69-51 win on the road Thursday over #16AAARoosevelt. In this breakneck game the Millers ran right along with Roosevelt, in fact a bit better. Roosevelt’s main focus of the night was to get the ball to Tyaneka Cage and then let her create off the bounce, Cage was not “on” in her shooting, and she tried to find the frequency all night. She launched 21 3s on the night but only connected twice. The Millers had better fortune behind the arc with six made 3s on the evening. The game also featured two players listed at 6-3----Washburn’s Chase Coley and Roosevelt’s Bryanna Brittain. Coley is sleeker, and more versatile than Brittain. Coley ended up the night with the top 31 club score of 39. (There were five new additions to the 31 club with three Millers and two Teddies). Coley can handle the ball and did bring the ball up occasionally. Washburn used Coley. Brittain is strictly a post up, back to the basket type player, and even though she had success vs Washburn the focus of the offense remained with the hard driving Cage.

Roosevelt had two players that piled up fouls fast: ….this is the name, I am not making it up….Felony Unique Miller and Cage. Both are main ball handlers for the Teddies. Cage picked up her 4th foul (over the back on a rebound) in the first half with 1:17 left. She left with the score 29-28 in favor of Washburn. She sat out the start of the second half, but had to return prematurely when Miller committed her fifth felony with 16:30 left in the game. At that point Washburn was up only 34-30. But Cage was now not able to be as active on defense as her desire. She had to conserve that one foul. Washburn pushed their lead out to 46-35 after an 8-0 run.Roosevelt chipped away at that margin getting down to 55-50 with 3:54 left. One minute later that lead was back to 12 after 7 unanswered points. The only answer Roosevelt would have in that last portion of the game would be one lonely free throw. It was Miller time at the end of the game with a 14-1 finishing flourish.

Three Millers reached double digits led by Lucia Renikoff with 21 points. Aubrey DeVaughn and Chase Coley had 18 and 17 points respectively. Cage matched Renikoff with 21, but here is where the pp100s come in so clearly. Cage used 37 possessions to reach that 21 points and shot 31.3 (2s) and 9.5 (3s). Renikoff was much more efficient using only 13 possessions and she was on fire with 71.4 (2s) and 60 (3s).

Washburn is now 9-6 on the year----all six of their losses have come to AAAA teams. The Millers are alone in first place in Minneapolis at 5-0. Roosevelt had a five game winning streak snapped and is now 11-3 overall on the year, 4-2 in the city.
