Winter 2012-13 Week That Was #9: Part 4: Weekly Award

This is the fourth part to the week that was #9-----weekly awards

WEEKLY AWARDS

TEAM

Park Center takes home this award for the week with their comeback win over Andover on Tuesday night. It took overtime but the Pirates got the job done after trailing by 19 points at one point in the first half. Even with 4:30 left PC trailed by 9. A combination of fouls, injuries (for Andover), execution and grit carried the day. Six straight scoring possessions put PC up 70-69. Andover made a three to carry the game into the extra session. PC scored their first three chances in OT and the momentum remained in the Pirates hands. PC shot a sizzling 57.9% from 2 point range the 4th best so far this year. They also went to the free throw line for 39 attempts. PC faces a rough road in sections with DeLaSalle in the way. Playing in the Northwest Suburban, a AAAA conference, should benefit the Pirates for big game feel in March. So will the knowledge they can rise from the dead.

PLAYER & DEFENDER

Cayla McMorris of Park Center had a double double of 30 points and 16 defensive stops in the comeback win over Andover. The 5-11 sleek forward can get to the rim and drain the 3. She stuck one big 3 in the comeback in regulation. She also has great anticipation as evidenced by her game high six steals. One, right before the end of regulation, looked like a game sealer, but Andover struck for three at the buzzer. McMorris has one of the better touches per point with a low 2.96 despite being the main focus of every defense she runs up against.

NEWCOMER

Lucia Renikoff of Washburn was playing in the JV game when I arrived at Roosevelt on Thursday night. She played a half. She then started for the varsity and, after her varsity performance, her JV days may be numbered. Renikoff had 21 points and a week’s high of 161.5 pp100. Renikoff finished lay ups, has a nice pull up jumper with a 2/3 midrange game that night, plus was 3/5 from beyond the arc. The 5-8 soph has good vision and decision making skills. She set up teammates 19 times, now they need to finish. Expect to hear more from her in the coming weeks as Washburn makes a push to go to state.
