Robbinsdale Cooper held off a furious second-half rally by Crookston to defeat the Pirates, 77-68 at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Hopkins' Lindbergh Center. Cooper led by as many as 20 points early in the second half before the Pirates closed to within three in the final minutes.
The Hawks built up a big first-half lead by forcing the Pirates into numerous turnovers, converting them to fast-break points. Lightning-quick guard Chelsey McGee led the way with 22 points for Cooper, while Laurie Bohler (16), Talayiah Rich (14), Jasper McNeal (12) and Manita Kelly (11) all scored in double figures.
But in the second half, Crookston took better care of the ball and began feeding Erica Samuelson (10 points) and Brooke Heggie (18) in the paint. Sydney Boike chipped in with 17 points for Crookston.
