The last two seasons for the Upsala Cardinals girls’ basketball team has ended at the hands of the Sebeka Trojans.

In the 2009-10 season, they lost to the Trojans 82-59. Last year, poor shooting allowed the Trojans to sneak by the Cardinals 58-55.

So this season, the lady Cardinals were on a mission to prevent that from happening when the two teams met in the 5A sub-section championship game.

Third time is a charm.

After battling back and forth and being in a 25-25 tie at halftime, the lady Cardinals finally got the surge they desperately needed in the second half to come away with a 64-57 win and advance to the Section 5A championship game.

Both teams had key players missing time due to injuries. Sebeka’s Alicia Boe’s season came to an end when she tore her ACL in last Saturday’s playoff game against Nevis. She has over 1,800 career points.

On the other end, Upsala’s Kimmy Mrozek, who scored her 1000th point just two weeks ago, was forced into an emergency role for the Cardinals because of an ankle sprain.

Junior Sadie Welinski took over Mrozek’s spot in the starting lineup and filled in nicely.
