It’s tough making free throws in pressure situations.

Sami Payne and Kayla Jo Davis each made one in the final minute of overtime, giving No. 6 Maranatha a 67-65 victory over No. 5-ranked Ada-Borup in the Class 1A quarterfinals Thursday at Mariucci Arena.

Ada-Borup missed a short baseline jumper with 2 seconds left.

Maranatha tied it at 61-all when senior forward Elise Moore made the first of two free throws with three-tenths of a second remaining. She was fouled in the act of shooting after grabbing an offensive rebound.

Ada-Borup took a 61-60 lead when junior guard Brooklyn Erickson did likewise, making the first of two free throws. The Cougars only made one of their previous four attempts while trying to protect a lead. They led 57-52 with 2:35 remaining.

The Cougars jumped out to a 23-12 lead in the first half, only to be outscored 21-7 in the final 5 minutes, 30 seconds to trail by three at halftime. They committed 18 turnovers before intermission.

Junior guard Kylie Post took matters into her own hands to give Maranatha a 33-30 lead at the half. Post had 18 of her game-high 24 points prior to halftime.

Senior Emma Kroshus and sophomore Mariah McKeever ignited a 13-4 to start the second half for Ada-Borup, giving the Cougars a 43-37 lead.
