The No. 7-rated Cardinals scored 39 of the first 49 points and steamrolled Red Lake 71-41 in the Class 1A quarterfinals Thursday at Mariucci Arena

“We definitely thought about last year,” said Cardinals leading-scorer Chelsea Swatek, referring to a 70-55 quarterfinal loss to Wheaton-Herman-Norcross after a slow start. Swatek, who finished with a game-high 23 points, callied it “a big advantage coming back this year. We were comfortable, and ready to play.”

Swatek and Shaily Hakamaki each had 11 points in the first half, where the Cardinals (26-4) shot 60 percent. The Cardinals also hit 57 percent (9-for-16) of their threes while building a 46-15 lead.

“We are all great shooters,” Swatek said. “This was one of our better games, offensively and defensively.”

Taya Hakamaki added 16 points, while Shaily Hakamaki finished with 11. They are cousins.

Red Lake (24-3), appearing in its first state tournament, was led by Division I recruit Grace White had 13 points. White, who has committed to the University of Denver commit, 4-for-13 from the field.
