Players from both Wheaton/Herman-Norcross and Cromwell-Wright looked at each other and knew where they stood for Thursday’s Class 1A quarterfinal game.

No. 5 seed Wheaton/Herman-Norcross had a size and strength advantage while No. 4 Cromwell-Wright would rely on speed and outside shooting. Wheaton/Herman-Norcross won this battle of stylistic differences and the game, 70-55, at Mariucci Arena.

“We’re pretty big and strong,” said 5-10 sophomore center Briona Edwards, who led the Warriors with 21 points. “We were thinking the ball was going to be thrown into the post a lot so we had to be on our A-game.”

The Warriors (29-2) took command thanks to a 48-28 advantage in points scored in the paint. The Cardinals’ three-point shooting couldn’t make up the difference. They shot seven-for-28.

“They posted us up a lot,” said junior forward Bailey Gronner, who led Cromwell-Wright (27-4) with 19 points. “And then I got beat up a lot having to play help defense.”

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross, riding a 19-game winning streak, advances to play No. 1 seed Goodhue in the semifinals at noon on Friday at Williams Arena.
