Hopkins, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A, continued its quest to claim the program’s seventh state championship, securing another state tournament berth with a convincing 88-62 victory over Wayzata on Tuesday in the Class 4A, Section 6 final at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School.

Michigan State-bound forward Nia Hollie led Hopkins (27-2) with a game-high 27 points while junior Ashley Bates added 18. Hopkins is seeking its fifth state title since the 2010-11 season and second in a row.

“We’re on a really strong mission to defend our state title, but at the same time we want to get better and create relationships with each other because 10 of us are leaving,” Hollie said.

Hopkins led 38-31 at halftime but outscored Wayzata 21-8 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

“We shot the ball pretty well and we defended a little bit better and they got in some foul trouble, so we kind of attacked the room a little bit more,” Hopkins coach Brian Cosgriff said of his team’s second-half surge.

Junior Sydney Frank led Wayzata (20-9) with 20 points.
