The race for the Mid-State Conference championship looks as if it could be close again this year with Pequot Lakes and Staples-Motley, which finished second and third, respectively last season, battling for position with defending league champion Detroit Lakes.

The No. 5-2A Eagles (8-0, 1-0) picked up a big 85-78 overtime win over No. 4-2A Roseau on Dec. 30. Senior Haley Weibolt and freshman Olivia Lane can score for Pequot Lakes.

Staples-Motley (8-2, 2-1) features four players averaging more than eight points per game, led by senior Quinn Uhlman (14.0 ppg).
