This state tournament stuff is nothing new for Marshall and it showed in a convincing 65-30 victory over first-time entrant Princeton in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Target Center.

With a lineup that is nearly intact from the 2014 team that suffered a heart-breaking triple overtime loss to Park Center in the Class 3A championship game, Marshall looked every bit like a team bent on ridding itself of some painful state tournament memories.

“We thought about that every day,” said guard Sarah Buysse, who posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. “We want the chance to redeem ourselves.”

The Tigers jumped on Princeton – also nicknamed Tigers – quickly, scoring the first nine points of the game en route to a 42-14 halftime advantage. Marshall dominated in every aspect, outrebounding Princeton 27-13, hitting 6 of 11 three-point attempts and holding their foe to 20.7 percent field goal shooting (6 of 29).

“It was important to us to get off to a big start,” Marshall coach Dan Westby said. “I think our pressure wore them down as much mentally as it did physically.”

Many of the Marshall players also play on the volleyball team, which has made 14 consecutive state tournament appearances. Their familiarity with big games was a decided advantage.

“We hoped it would be,” Westby said. “But we weren’t sure. When we had watched [Princeton] on film, they were really impressive. So we came out pretty focused.”
