Orono at Waconia
7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23

Orono had its hopes for an undefeated season dashed in a 61-55 loss to No. 2-4A Minnetonka on Jan. 13, but the Spartans have the opportunity to remain perfect in league play when they travel to Waconia for a Wright County Conference East Division game on Jan. 23. Orono, Waconia and New Prague are 1-0 in division play and tied atop the standings.

Orono (15-1) is the top-ranked team in Class 3A, thanks in large part to its depth on offense. Eight players have scored 10 or more points in a game, led by sophomore guard Tori Andrew's 31 in a 71-47 victory at Buffalo on Dec. 23. Andrew (14.1 ppg), senior guard Kiera Nelson (12.5 ppg) and junior guard Danielle Jorgensen (10.8 ppg) lead the Spartans in scoring.

Waconia (8-6) can score, and score a lot, as the Wildcats topped the 100-point mark twice this season. Senior guard Anna Schmitt leads Waconia in scoring (26 ppg) while playing in only eight games. Senior guard Kendall Elder (12.2 ppg) and junior guard Madelin Dammann (12.0 ppg) add balance to the Wildcats' offense.

Orono seems to be the favorite to win the conference, but Waconia could change that perception by giving the Spartans a close game.
